Fishing & Shooting

There is a great variety available to the angler and hunts man locally. For the keen angler there is lake fishing at Milford’s Lough Fern and trout fishing at the picturesque Bunlin Bridge. Facilities are available for the deep-sea angler, the gun enthusiast and there is also private trout fishing to be found locally.

Walking & Activity Spots

There are organised walking groups in the area – the Mevagh Ramblers and the Milford Walking Group. We have the Golan Pad Walk, (sign posted from Milford), and a 2km forestry walk at the lay by in Woodquarter with breath-taking views of the Mulroy Bay. In the village of Kerrykeel there is a walk that takes you to the Dolmen Stone. There are a wide variety of sports halls and amenities all along the bay that caters for all sports. There are 8 Walking & Cycling Routes on the back roads leading onto the main Mulroy Drive 

Heritage

The area is rich in history and heritage, from the Gallowglassess to the Ulster Plantation to the Earls of Leitrim. There are many historical treasures to be found along the Mulroy Drive including thatched cottages, craft shops and an old forge. There are also a number of vintage car rallies throughout the summer.

Aquaculture & Marine

There is a thriving marine aquaculture business on the bay with mussel farming, scallop farming, oyster farming and salmon farming. Mulroy Bay is one of the few bays in the world having a natural settlement of scallop spat. The water in the bay is monitored weekly by the department of marine and is one of the cleanest bays in the country.

Lough Swilly Ferry

The Mulroy Drive is ideally located for exploring the rest of Donegal. Why not continue your trip for the day on to Inishowen by using the Lough Swilly Ferry. The car ferry service connects the Fanad & Inishowen peninsulas (from Rathmullan to Buncrana) & operates from the June Bank Holiday weekend to September.

Donegal hill walking is one of the best ways to discover the true scale of the county’s rugged and unspoilt beauty.

Your group can enjoy guided mountain escapes which safely take in the highest, most secluded and truly magnificent locations across Donegal’s mountainous terrain.

Mountain treks and hikes are available night and night. Hikes can be tailored to make the most of full moon experiences, aurora hunts, sunsets and sunrises.

Northern Lights

Experience Aurora Borealis is all of their glory from one of the best viewing points in Ireland at Fanad Lighthouse. Fanad Head is Ireland’s second most northerly point and provides a stunning vista for the spectacular Northern Lights, especially in the heart of winter.  Be sure to bring a flask of your favourite warm drink, plenty of layers and a warming blanket, and simply sit back and enjoy one of the must awe-inspiring shows on earth.

Ashtree Stables

Ashtree Stables is a family run centre positioned at the base of the rugged hills of Donegal. Our route overlooks stunning views of Mulroy Bay whilst riding either alongside or through the mountain. Whether you are an experienced rider or a novice wanting to try some horse riding on your holidays we can accommodate you!  We have a varied selection of horses and ponies of different sizes who love getting their photo taken as a memory of your experience!  Our stables are based on our farm so whilst you are with us you will also meet our resident donkey ‘Eeyore’ and our ferrets ‘coffee’ and ‘cream’.

Game and clay pigeon shooting can be arranged through local gun clubs and the local clay pigeon club.

Mulroy Pigeon Club
Visitors are always welcome at Mulroy Clay Pigeon Club which is USPCA registered for national and Olympic skeet. It hosts seven national Skeet shoots and one Olympic skeet shoot each year.

Bracken Hill Pheasantries
Bracken Hill Pheasantries, a family-run game farm, controls a shoot at Bracken Hill for duck, partridge or pheasant shooting (season-depending)
Non-shooting guests are welcome to attend at either shoot.

    Rathmullan Charters

    Rathmullan Charters operate two fully licenced charter boats Enterprise 1 and Swilly Explorer based at our own pontoon at Rathmullan Co. Donegal. They fish the sheltered waters of Lough Swilly and the many wrecks off Fanad Head which hold an abundance of fish including pollack, cod, ray, gurnard, whiting, ling, thornback ray and many varieties of flat fish. Lough Swilly is famous for tope which arrive around mid May and stay in the area for most of the summer. Blue shark, common skate and porbeagle are also available later in the year. Rods and reels are available free of charge to groups of up to 10 persons and they provide tea and coffee on board. They also provide sightseeing, bird and dolphin watching and corporate outings on Lough Swilly tailored to suit your own needs

    Donegal Cycle Route

    The Donegal Cycle Route starts in Donegal Town connecting to the North West Trail and and follows a route along the local roads as much as possible through Mountcharles, Inver, Ardara, Dungloe, Loughanure, Crolly, Dunlewey, Creeslough, Glen, Milford, Ramelton, Letterkenny, and connects with the National Cycle Network and Sustrans Route 92 at Newtowncunningham.

     

    There are several signed spurs along the route to the nearby towns of Burtonport, Gortahork, and Dunfanaghy. There are currently 3 signed loops on the route - The Dooey Way Loop at Leitirmacaward, The Maghery Way Loop at Dungloe and the Bunlin Way Loop at Milford. These offer short scenic circular diversions along the route.

     

    The Donegal Cycle Route will take the cyclist on a journey through a myriad of landscapes, from the hedgerow lined roads of agricultural lowlands to the exposed roads of upland bogs, from coastal cliffs views to mountain vistas, from sea loughs to lakes and bustling Towns to tranquil villages.

     

    The Donegal Cycle Route follows mostly Class 2 & 3 county roads but there are occasions where the Route has no alternative but to use more major roads. Cyclists are asked to be aware of other road traffic at all times, to obey the rules of the road, leave no trace, and most importantly enjoy the scenery and hospitality along the way.

    Surf lessons for all levels are delivered by experienced and passionate instructors in nearby Ballyheirnan Bay. Fun-filled five-day kid’s Surf Camps are are offered throughout July and August from Monday to Friday.

    Surf guiding is offered for improver/intermediate surfers looking for the best conditions available. The Adventure One team draws on all of their local knowledge and does all of the research so all that you have to do to score the best waves is concentrate of your surfing.
