Portsalon Golf Club
Where else could you drive across a golden beach with an Atlantic breeze testing your skill to the limit? The second hole at Portsalon is one of the most majestic and tricky that you will ever encounter. On many’s an occasion it’s been revered as ‘one of the best holes’ in Ireland. Mulroy Woods is the nearest accommodation to Portsalon Golf Club.
The 17th hole – ‘River In’, is a great test which has remained unchanged for more than 120 years. The 50-metre approach steadily inclines towards a plateau green – beware as it is fast and treacherous. When you make your putt, don’t forget swing around and take in the beauty of the landscape behind you.
Portsalon Golf Club is one of Ireland’s oldest clubs, having been established in 1891. A founding member of the Golfing Union of Ireland, it has played host to many of stars and lovers of the game alike in its history. It was redesigned by master designer Pat Ruddy and measures 6,472 metres (par 72, standard scratch 73).
Its setting amid mountains, beach and sea make Portsalon among the most popular courses in Donegal. The first seven holes will wind you through towering sand dunes above the beach. On the back nine the spectacular views become more pronounced as you swerve back inland.
